Refurbishment Part 2

By Paul · Comments (0)

New shower, new one-to-one area upstairs, new kitchen, new changing room, new rubber floor, new equipment: it’s all happening right now!

So please be patient while we get the work done.

We will close for classes from this Friday 26th  ‘till Thursday 11th March, with one to one available from w/c 8th March. If things go faster than planned then we open for Tuesday 9th March at 8pm.

I have wanted to address the key shortcomings of the current set-up for a while and the feedback from you all has been very positive so it’s all systems go.

Response from Gordon…

By Paul · Comments (0)

We received a petition asking:

“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to oppose the adoption of the Codex Alimentarius (WHO/UN) proposals for imposing agro chemical use on all farmers, including Organic farmers, as well as restricting nutritional & herbal supplements.”

Details of Petition:

“If this bill is accepted & allowed to go through, it will result in farmers being forced to use pesticides, growth hormones & other agro chemicals, even if the farmers are trying to avoid chemicals & be organic. This could destroy the organic industry & inhibit consumers from choosing organic foods. There is a substantial evidence for the harm that pesticides, herbicides, excessive farm anti-biotics, hormones & other agro chemicals are doing to people’s health & to the environment. This policy will allow 7 of the most dangerous, previously banned highly toxic chemicals to be used once more in farming. This bill will also severely curtail people’s freedom of choice to maintain good health or recover from illness by using natural, easily available nutritional or herbal supplements because these will end up being banned or restricted to ineffective levels. The cost of accepting this legislation to our nation’s health, environment & to the NHS, is untenable.”

The Codex Alimentarius Commission was created in 1963 to develop food standards and guidelines.  One of the main purposes of Codex’s work is to protect the health of consumers.  The suggestion that there is a Codex-driven proposal to impose an international obligation to use pesticides on conventional or organic farms is untrue.  Codex standards and guidance are non-statutory, so no State is obliged to follow them.  At no time has Codex issued an instruction, or other form of communication, that pesticide use should be promoted or imposed.  The Codex Joint World Health Organization/ Food and Agricultural Organisation Meetings on Pesticide Residues provides independent scientific expert advice to Codex.  The membership and reports from meetings of this group are available at: www.fao.org (search for ‘meeting on pesticide residues’ and follow the link ‘Plant Production and Protection Division’).

The evaluation, marketing and use of pesticides in plant protection in the Community are regulated under Directive 91/414/EEC.  This Directive lays out a comprehensive risk assessment and authorisation procedure for pesticide active substances and products containing them.  Each active substance and product has to be proved safe in terms of human health (including residues in the food chain), animal health and the environment in order to allow them to be marketed.

The use of pesticides in the UK is highly controlled with uses limited to those treatments that are authorised and supported by appropriate data.  If growers wish to manage pest pressures without the use of pesticides then they are at liberty to do so.  Moreover, the trend in pesticide legislation is to increasingly restrict the use of pesticides, not increase their use.

The Codex Guidelines for Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements, published in 2005, is the only Codex document to address the issue of food supplements.  It does not address the issue of setting any levels for vitamins and minerals in food supplements.  The Food Standards Agency is not aware of any planned work by Codex in this area.

In the UK, herbal remedies are subject to separate controls and are overseen by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority.  Herbal remedies do not fall within the scope of existing, or planned, Codex guidelines.
